Joi AI is a platform for AI-lationships — personalized, emotionally intelligent connections between people and AI characters. We build characters that have their own personality, mood, and voice: they can ignore you, argue with you, miss you. If you've seen the film Her — that's roughly where we're headed.


Our platform serves both emotional and intimate needs without judgment, built on the values of rejection-free connection, sex positivity, freedom to be yourself, and ethical integrity. Today we have tens of millions of conversations on the platform. Our goal: 10% of the global population in long-term AI-lationships with our characters.


Joi Lab (joilab.ai) is our open research arm — we build open-source generative models, agent architectures, and training infrastructure. All code, weights, and data are public. We're not chasing the next ChatGPT wrapper; we're working on true AI agency: persistent memory, self-modification, self-authored constraints.

The role

You'll be the bridge between a founder, a CTO, and an AI engineering team — not by authority, but by making sure they're all building the same thing.

The teams are strong and fast-moving. That's exactly the problem: without someone holding the thread, context gets lost, priorities clash, and good engineers start blocking each other. That's where you come in.

You'll own delivery across a ~30-person R&D org. No direct reports — your leverage is clarity, trust, and the ability to walk into a room of senior engineers and be taken seriously. When a developer says "we can't do this," you'll know whether that's true. When a founder brings a new priority, you'll know how to push back without burning the relationship.

The product is in active development. This is the moment when a strong delivery person can genuinely change the pace of what gets shipped — not by adding process, but by removing friction nobody else has time to name.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Own end-to-end delivery across ML and backend teams
  • Act as a bridge between ML and R&D, ensuring alignment and smooth collaboration
  • Manage priorities, dependencies, and cross-team communication
  • Identify and eliminate bottlenecks impacting time-to-market
  • Ensure that features are delivered to production without loss of context or quality
  • Work closely with engineering, product, QA, and DevOps teams
  • Support teams in task decomposition and prioritization from a technical perspective
  • Drive execution in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Strong engineering background (Backend or Machine Learning)
  • Solid understanding of system architecture and technical dependencies
  • Hands-on mindset and ability to dive into technical details when needed
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • High level of ownership and adaptability
  • Confidence working in dynamic, high-pressure environments
  • 5+ years of experience, including:
    • hands-on development experience
    • experience in delivery / team leadership / management roles
